Now as summer is about to use up its weeks and days, the fall is approaching bringing many a joy to those of us who await its annual return but to me out of all the wonders that are to be offered by the fall; it is without much room for doubt the return of the opera season which is amongst its greatest delights. As some may not be aware most opera houses are closed by summer’s brutal heat, perhaps because there none that have air conditioning or least as far as my knowledge stretches. I however feel that the heat in the auditorium is not the only thing that leads to opera houses being closed but the fact that most operas extend over the one and half hour mark; some going on for four hours with music that in all sincerity is not light as are the delicate strings of for instance Vivaldi. Quite the opposite of being easy listening music as some might like to consider it, the music to be heard in operas is very heavy at times; to match any other kind in not only volume, (this considering that none of the music is being amplified by the use of electricity in any form) but in passion as well that goes beyond the sounds which are produced by orchestra and to the singing which is more then just words that are sung as opposed to spoken. In opera singers are required to act as well; making their ability to bring to live those characters just as important as their ability to sing notes in key. It is the music along with the performances being so intense that has guided me to the conclusion that opera is the sort of music which is not suited for the months of summer. Of course I am aware that this may be an overly personal point of view on my part for the cause that leads opera houses to close down during the summer as it may also be the need of the performers to go on vacation and what better time to do so then when most of their audience are doing likewise. I however will say for my part that I find summer to be so intense in its zapping me of my energy that it does not even encourage me to want to play my opera DVDs but rather concentrate on listening to symphonies or sonatas or other such music that is not opera. To many music may express different people’s mood but to me it also expresses the atmosphere to be found in different seasons of year, for instance summer’s months are ideal for symphonies and other such orchestral music which is what prompted me to write a poem called “Summer As A Symphony” while fall’s months are the same to start the opera season which goes till the start of summer. Fall on the other hand with the vitality it gives me allows me to enjoy the energy that comes from opera, where in summer’s heat the same feelings would simply exhaust me. At the start of my book “New York’s Opera Society”, the main character Bill Albert also finds his strength to attend a performance of Wagner’s Gotterdammerung from all that is the fall, from its falling leaves to the holidays that come at this time of year. Bill however is fictional as are most of the characters in my book “New York’s Opera Society” however as for myself there is one thing that I found strange about opera when I first started listening to it and that was how though many of the people who are opera fans are perhaps people of means who dress up in suits or intellectuals, though some may say snobs the stories connected to opera for the most part are about simple people. By “simple people” I have in mind not those who are of the upper social classes but those like the foot soldier who falls in love with the gypsy; whose name Carmen is that of the opera she stars in. It is precisely stories of people like this who give opera that feeling of passion as theirs are everyday stories of love, jealousy, anger and need that can even be found in many a film but in opera take on perhaps a more sophisticated tone given the background in which they are presented or the music and singing that make those lines so vivid. For instance when it comes to this sort of people we might take in to consideration the characters from the opera “La Boheme” who in poverty live the arts as it is bassically all they have to keep them company in the hardship life imposses on them. I naturally am aware that many will always see the opera as perhaps being boring and stuffy but I believe that if they could just read the stories behind most operas they will see that a lot of them if not most of them are about people whose lives are not so different then those seen in many a film. In opera there is action as in Wagner’s “Sigfried” which depicts its main charact “Sigfried” doing battle with a dragon after which he takes on and defeats his grandfather (though unkwon to him at the time) Wonton, who had killed his father. As for drama what more could one ask then the story of “Othello” which is also portrayed in one of Verdi’s operas that could match Shakespeare’s version of the same story for all its tension which has filled many an auditorium through out the world. There is as one might understand much more to opera then meets the eye and for he or she who is willing to give it a try I sugest that he or she do the following. First that he or she before going to see an opera read the story of the opera as to know what is happing on stage and prefably where ever possible to see it at an opera house that offers subtitles so he or she might follow the words. In my opinion seeing an opera without understanding what is being sung is as senseless as seeing a film without understanding what is being spoken. As for the music, this I do strongly recomend any perspective opera spectator to get hold of it beforehand in order that he or she might become familiar with it. It is dificult even for someone like myself who has seen many an opera to hear an opera for the first time. The music is more complicated then popular music, therefore it is not so easy to pick up on the melodies and harmonies let alone apreciate them. It is this the cause of why I suggest going out and buying a CD of the music and prefably not the whole opera at first but highlights as knowing the music to the whole opera will not be a real advantage over knowing just one hour of the music. Another reason for this recomendation is that it often happens that people do not like a song after hearing it for the first time but perhaps after having been forced to hear it many times on the radio or on TV they start liking that song that at first they did not like. This in my opinion would apply more with opera as the songs which in operas are called arias are longer and slightly more complicated not only in melody but in harmony then the average popular song so perhaps those who have visited an opera and walked away with boredom should try my sugestion and who knows perhaps next time they will not feel so disapoited after the opera. This is also the strategy I sugest parents to follow who are taking their child to an opera to see a performace for the first time which I have expanded on in my story “The Little Opera Singer” which can be found on several websites through out the internet.

A child, when in the garden festival like watching martial arts of Peking opera, but love to watch monkey show. Intense sound, a small monkey on one by one they tumble from the flag waving over, most caught my eye.

Growing up, gradually realized that the intrinsic beauty of opera. For example, the “front universe,” Zhao Yanrong faking his illness in the anti-marriage, Mei Lanfang has played so charming, graceful; “Su San Qi Jie” is a bitter play, but create a beautiful and kind-hearted, a wronged woman, lovely image.

“Travels” in the “Lake home listening to book” section of the Jinan wonderful picture of the frenzy of drum pear. Beijingers love of opera, in no way inferior Lake home of the spectators -

Ma Lianliang enjoy singing many years ago had “empty city.” When the President holding a feather fan and the city stand head and circumflex gently sang, “I was standing tower view of mountains, just outside the ear heard disorderly … …”, the Juventa during which a low voice singing. Niu Zhuantou, I saw men and women of the audience Yaotouhuangnao, lips flaring, mesmerized, as if with a “magic opera startled.”

Less entertainment old time, people opera is “passionately devoted”, and even love to “fear” level.

Empress loves opera, often called the palace singing actor. One day, I heard “Jade River” in “Yangruhukou have to go no further,” one, the rage, immediately cast out palace, shall not be ordered from the palace. Troupe quietly asked around and came to realize that the original Buddha, is a “sheep”! Quickly changed the word “fish caught, never to return.”

Warlord Cao Kun fear “Zhuofang Cao”, explicitly banned. Fides should laugh, he was really being Feng “catch” live, and ultimately “put” return to Tianjin.

Chang Tso-lin Manchurian leaders not to play “phoenix nest” on the grounds that “Phoenix” “Bong” harmonics. However Fengtian the “curtain” or “nest”, returned Northeast … …

Now, the TV show often plays small pieces of singing children, these children are small pieces of the complex contains a distinct – Bao transmission solo straight out of the awe-inspiring righteousness Bull, Shaoxing opera “the world fell a forest sister,” revealed the joy of love at first sight, Opera “Who says men and women as” flow overflow tone, third tone of lofty sentiments and aspirations. Similarly, the audience favorite, often performed opera, all surging emotion of some kind. For example, “Lin Night Flight”, the repeated framing of Lin on the night express when the filled with grief and indignation Liangshan; “Wen Ji Gui Han”, the Wenji return to the Han Dynasty earnest yearning after the children, “Jigumacao”, the Mi value stirring, heart pine to make the praise or criticize vent, “Shiro Visits his Mother”, the fill the gap of the “West Allegro” duet where men and women, it is difficult to break away the affection of love intertwined with deep and collision … …

Opera, a description of the battlefield fighting the play a lot of Yang family, such as the “Iron Flag array” “Solitary Note Function”, “emerald green mountains,” and so on, and featuring children from the performers, but one has not handed down; and full of flesh and blood family, romantic Yang family love and patriotism play, tempting the audience nostalgic for generations, long speech ever.

Department of lovers, the red line to be joking, the audience with the red line is the soul-stirring opera, touching hearts all the Music.

Concert, the opera dance is also fascinating. “Han Jin mouth”, the eight tiger painted waving the banner of the brawny form of maneuvering over the court like a run, showing Guan Yu’s illustrious military might; “Divergence”, the Ren Hui and Liu Lihua of the dark hall rally thrilling, exciting. General set off before finishing the armor, “from the tyrants,” the cloud hands, kick, the entire crown and a series of motion synthesis. In sonorous accompaniment, most vividly manifested in mighty brave generals, invincible heroism.

Some amazing dance – bit-part player actor Pei Yuanqing flew over his head supple, nimble like a Chunyan; Yang, Shiro, to break away from the hair stand upright, as if out of gravity moment … …

The “Drunken Beauty” in the “lying fish”, “Concubine” sword dance “Tiannvsanhua” in the Ribbon Dance, in the melodious, soothing sound of music, gives a pleasing enjoy the beauty.

High level of performance from the artist’s strong sense of responsibility to the audience. One day in 1918, staged a “Street Blues”, Shang Xiaoyun Youteng and swollen feet. Class teacher rushed the stage like that, accept refund. Shang Xiaoyun resolutely stop: “The audience of me, my mind can not do without the audience.” Swollen feet do not have to wear embroidered shoes on, he just cut a hole, barely landed, teeth play, meticulous performances.

Learned the child can not do without training hard. I was in grade school, teachers encourage students to study hard, pointing to the wall not far from the Forbidden City, said; “You know what? Every morning to the foot of the Peking Opera singing children Diaosang Zi. Winter before dawn shouting against the wall, has been to Hachu front of the gas to melt the ice before the end of morning exercise. “

There are three old world drama: Greek Tragedy and Comedy, drama and Indian Sanskrit drama in China. The first two in the passage of time in the gradually disappeared, with the exception of Chinese drama from generation to generation, and excel. In more than three hundred kinds of Chinese drama, Peking Opera is widely recognized as the most brilliant pearl.

We can say that opera is a legend in the history of world drama.

Peking Opera through more than thirteen hundred stories up, just be a picture of the history of the Chinese nation for thousands of years. Peking Opera and traditional Chinese medicine, painting collectively, the “three national essence.”

“Dream of Red Mansions” There is no opera. Beijing is the emblem of class three decades after the death of Cao Xueqin things. “Dream of Red Mansions”, the predecessor of one of the only opera opera. Kun Jia own team, please Yiyang Prefecture troupe to perform. Eighteenth gyrus, Jiaqiang to play the official age of “Peony Pavilion” in the “Garden” “Dream” was old officer refused. Dan is a women’s apartment door because Du, Ling Guan is the speech posted once, and she determined not to play non-Bank of play. Accordingly we can see, Cao times, as an important basis for the opera opera, has strict branch of the.

Beijing Opera in Beijing, and it is in the field. Peking Opera and Chinese opera at the emblem on the basis of production, from Anhui Anhui Opera, Chinese Opera from Hubei. Therefore, although the opera “life” in Beijing, it is to drink the South “milk” grew up. Opera has also absorbed the scene in my hometown Shaanxi’s “nutrients.”

Well why not take a trip to the Gaiety Theatre and enjoy what is on offer during the 2008 Winter Season! Find out more about the live performances that will take place here at this historic venue through the Opera Ireland Production.

Opera Ireland – Who are they?

Officially the national opera company of Ireland, Opera Ireland hosts four main scale operas at the Gaiety Theatre each year, and performing opera teams may tour venues nationally and internationally at various times throughout the year as well.

The history of Opera Ireland can be traced back to the early 1940′s and the creation of the Dublin Grand Opera Society by opera aficionados in Ireland’s capital. This society organised opera events at the Gaiety Theatre from its early days, in conjunction with Radio Eireann and the Army School of Music, and thus cementing a long lasting relationship between the Society and Ireland’s National Broadcaster, which has endured to today.

In the 1960s the Opera Group played host to many European Opera companies, and heightened the public interest in opera. Resulting from this venture was the hosting of opera acts from Europe, the Italian Government provided public funding for many Italian Opera acts to perform at the Gaiety, and since then renowned artists such as Pavarotti and Domingo have performed at the venue.

The company went through a brand image change in the 1980′s and became an independent private company, with some investment by the Irish Arts Council. In 1996, the company was renamed as Opera Ireland and a new brand logo was created.

Winter Season 2008 Programme…

The main focus of this year’s Winter Season at Opera Ireland is hosting four opera classics at the Gaiety Theatre. You can enjoy the stunning performances of “Madama Butterfly”, “Don Giovanni”, “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Mazeppa” throughout the Winter Season. Each performance combines the passion, glory, drama and theatrics of Opera performances in a marvellous setting. Opera Ireland is committed to the selection of both Irish and International casts, all providing their own individual creativity to the performances.

Opera Ireland will also honour, as part of its 2008 Winter Season, the birth of the renowned 19th century composer Michael William Balfe. In his memory, together with the RTE Concert Orchestra, there will be an innovative concert performance of “Falstaff”, his wonderful Italian Style Opera.

Opera Ireland is committed to the showcasing of original Irish opera, and this season will show the performance of Fergus Johnston’s “The Earl of Kildare”.

And don’t forget the spectaular showing of the “Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” which will be hosted at various cinemas in Dublin. This will be the premier showing of this international opera, which hails from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. A unique event not to be missed, and it’s the premier showing of cinematic opera in Ireland.
The Baroque period of music is an era that existed from the year 1600 to the year 1750. A Baroque style is a set of styles from European classical music. The music of the Baroque period ranges from a style similar to that of the previous Romantic period, to the style found in the following Classical musical period.

“Misshapen pearl” is the phrase that the original meaning of “baroque” was derived from. This fits into the characterisations on the architecture of this period.

Many famous composers have risen to fame during the Baroque period of music. Well known composers such as the likes of Claudio Monteverdi, Antonio Vivaldi, George Frideric Handel, and Johann Sebastian Bach can attribute some or all of their musical style to the Baroque period.

During the Baroque period, the style of music changed. Composers and performers started to used more elaborate musical ornamentation, made changes to the way music was written and created new ways to play the existing musical instruments. All these changes allowed for the rise of opera as a musical genre, and many of the concepts from this period are still in use today.

The term “Baroque Period” was not conceived until after the Baroque period was over. There is still some disagreement to this day about what the Baroque period encompasses. A few rogue musicologists have argued that the Baroque period should be split into a Baroque period and a Mannerist period so that the periods come in to align with those assigned to the visual arts.

Classical music can be traced back hundred of years ago, from the 1600s when commencement of new form of music style had emerged after the Renaissance period and what is now known as Baroque music.

Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi and Henry Purcell were Baroque music composers that left unparalleled works for the history of classical music.

Classical music stations today would even hit on the airwaves the popular Brandenburg Concertos and Air on the G String, which are written by Bach more than 300 years ago.

One of the most distinct pieces of Baroque music and classical music that is significantly ever written was the Spring act from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

The well-known English composer, Purcell, wrote Dido and Aenas which are thought of as the most celebrated opera to arise from the Baroque period of classical music.

Baroque music is characterized by a unity of mood throughout an entire work, less frequent shifts in dynamics than its successors inside Classical or Romantic eras, and a devotion to sacred music, evident in Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, or Handel’s Messiah.

The Baroque music period featured the harpsichord mostly in their compositions of music as the piano has not been invented yet. That is why one will never see a piano concerto from the Baroque period of classical music.

Baroque music definitely kind of got things started out for classical music as most people know it, and served as the foundation on which later composers, including Mozart and Beethoven, would produce their music.

Actually, it was from the words Of Beethoven that referred to Handel as the greatest composer that ever lived.

Baroque music was not simply limited to sacred music, either, as Bach wrote some in the greatest fugues, and Handel was renowned the globe over for his ability to write good oratorios.

Even people with ardent devotion for classical music will point out Bach and Handel as a few of their favorite composers of all time. And to ask them why, besides they are the most preferred composers of Baroque music, would probably receive a reply it is difficult to surpass the music that both great composers have created.

Baroque music was the pre-dominant element in advancement of classical music. Baroque was also the time period noted for numerous music composers from different countries to endow a large contribution of their work. It is actually one of the intriguing and fascinating music eras, which anyone can discover and familiarize to learn.

Classical music can be traced back hundred of years ago, from the 1600s when commencement of new form of music style had emerged after the Renaissance period and what is now known as Baroque music.

Baroque music composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi and Henry Purcell, left distinguished legacy of classical music worldwide.

Today it is likely to be played among classical music stations the famous Brandenburg Concertos and Air on G String which are composed more than three hundred years ago by JSBach.

Vivaldi wrote the Four Seasons, of which the Spring movement is one with the most recognizable pieces of Baroque music and classical music, for that matter ever written.

Purcell, the renowned English composer, wrote Dido and Aeneas, which may perhaps rank as the greatest opera ever to come out on the Baroque period of classical music.

As a matter of fact, it was Beethoven that once referred to Handel since the greatest composer that ever lived.

Sacred music was not just the purpose of baroque music as Bach wrote some of greatest fugues, and with the ability to write fine oratorios, Handel was known worldwide.

Most people with particular liking to classical music would make reference to Bach and Handel as the two most appreciated composers of all time. Baroque music created by these renowned composers are simply incomparable.

Baroque music was an integral component of classical music today. It was also one of the highlights of music history wherein many composers from different nations provided for a massive musical history achievement. Baroque is really an interesting period for music, and to anyone that has knowledge of classical music, baroque music is surely one of them.

Passionato launches the world’s most comprehensive online classical resource, providing access to catalogues from the largest major classical record labels as well as the key classical independent labels

London — 11th September 2008 — Passionato launches today, giving classical music lovers the opportunity to browse, sample and download single tracks, works or albums from its catalogue of classical music recordings. Tracks are available from its Store at http://www.passionato.com in superior audio quality (320kbps MP3 or lossless FLAC). All of the music is DRM-free, which allows music purchased on Passionato to be transferred to any computer or portable audio player (including the iPod®) and burnt to CD without any restrictions.

Post-launch Passionato will continue to sign-up more independent labels, and to add new releases from the key major and independent labels on a weekly basis.

Passionato is free to join, with no subscription and with highly competitive, flexible pricing according to whether users download tracks, works or albums. Users will be able to download free beta software — the Player — which allows them to organise all the music they download alongside any music they import (rip) from their classical CD collections. Passionato’s extensive recording information (metadata) means the Player can identify any classical CD a user imports by matching it with Passionato’s own database, providing instant information on, for example, composer, date of recording, record label, recording location, recording producer, recording engineer and period.

Passionato’s Store allows users to listen to samples of up to 60 seconds of every track in its catalogue, and to browse by composer (subdivided by period, e.g. Baroque, Renaissance or Romantic, or by nationality), by artist (subdivided by voice, e.g. mezzo-soprano or baritone, or by nationality) and by record label.

In this way, users can roam Passionato’s store freely, discovering new recordings without having to pay a penny. The Passionato Store also features the Passionato team’s own expert recommendations on highly rated works, thousands of reviews from national media and specialist music publications, and a regularly updated chart. Users can rate works using the Player, an easy method of sorting favourite pieces.

Passionato also encourages musical debate amongst classical music lovers within its dedicated Community section. The forums provide a place for quick-fire debate on a wide range of topics.

In the spirit of discovering and sharing classical music, Passionato includes a number of Web 2.0 features. Users can post links to their favourite classical albums on 34 of the most popular online social networks, including Facebook and MySpace, directing friends to the Passionato Store where they can hear free audio samples. Users can also send personal recommendations/links to their friends directly via email via the ‘Send to a Friend’ function, and bookmark their favourites using sites such as Del.icio.u.s.

To coincide with Passionato’s launch, everyone who registers at passionato.com can claim 10 free pre-selected tracks, one of which is which is an entire 30-minute work (current pre-selected work is Saint-Saens’ Symphony No.3).

James Glicker, Founder and CEO of Passionato, carried out the preliminary research for Passionato while living in the US after he finished a two-year term as President of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. James’s twenty years in the music industry include positions as Head of Worldwide Marketing at BMG Classics (trading as RCA Victor), Managing Director of BMG Australia and President of MusicNow (now part of Napster).

James says: “I’m an avid consumer of classical music myself and, having worked in the industry for twenty years, I am aware of how technology and the internet are becoming increasingly a part of how people access, consume and share knowledge about classical music. Passionato is delighted to have the cooperation of the largest majors and we will over the next six months and beyond be signing up even more labels — all with the ultimate goal of presenting people who love classical music with an easy and cost effective way of organising and expanding their music collections.”

The UK recorded music industry association, the BPI, adds: “Digital distribution already offers great choice as to how music fans can acess and enjoy music online, and its potential is even greater. We expect the new Passionato service will greatly enhance the digital music offering for classical music aficionados and we warmly welcome innovation of this type in music retail.”

Requiem Mass in D Minor Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final Masterpiece was commissioned in mid 1791 by the Austrian count Franz Von Walsegg, as a Tribute to the passing of his young wife Anna. Mozart began his final composition in Prague, suffering from an undetermined illness, which would eventually take his life and rob him of the chance to see the completion of his Magnum Opus. After Mozart’s death, his understudy ‘Franz Xaver Süssmayr’, at the behest of Mozart’s wife, completed the missing parts of the Requiem. Requiem Mass was first performed on January 2, 1793, in a private concert for the benefit of Mozart’s grieving wife, Constanze Mozart. The Following are the lyrics, translated from their Original Latin Grant them eternal rest, Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. You are praised, God, in Zion, and homage will be paid to You in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer, to You all flesh will come. Grant them eternal rest, Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. Day of wrath, day of anger will dissolve the world in ashes, as foretold by David and the Sibyl. Great trembling there will be when the Judge descends from heaven to examine all things closely. The trumpet will send its wondrous sound throughout earth’s sepulchres and gather all before the throne. Death and nature will be astounded, when all creation rises again, to answer the judgment. A book will be brought forth, in which all will be …

Article by Clive Oliver Blacksmith

What is Classical Music?

The classical music period was 1750 to 1820. The term ‘classical music’ originated from the Latin term ‘classicus’, meaning taxpayer of the highest class. After the term made its way through the French, German and English languages, one of the earliest definitions of the word meant ‘classical, formal’. The term ‘classical music’ did not appear until the early 19th century, its earliest reference recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary is from about 1836.

There are many styles of music that exist within the classical music; these are symphony, opera, choral works and chamber music.

Among its musical characteristics are the use of dynamics and orchestral colour in a thematic way; the use of rhythm, including periodic structure and harmonic rhythm, to give definition to large-scale forms, along with the use of modulation to build longer spans of tension and release.

Classical music is often distinguished by its wide use of instruments of varying tones and pitches used to create a deep, rich sound. Classical music was hugely affected by the invention and modification of instruments throughout time. There are no set instruments that had to be used for classical music, composers wrote for orchestras, wind ensembles or various combinations of instruments for chamber music. Instruments like the piano, violins, flutes and trumpets were used. The human voice was also used, which invented its own series of classical music, the Opera. Composers also wrote solo pieces for a specific instrument, accompanied by piano.

Classical music composers often aspired to instil in their music a very complex relationship between its affective (emotional) content and the intellectual means by which is it achieved. Many works make use of musical development, the process by which a musical idea is repeated in different contexts or in altered form.

Classical music is primarily a written musical tradition, preserved in music notation (sheet music), as opposed to being transmitted orally. This is a very good method of preserving the piece as the written music contains the technical instructions for performing the work. The written score, however, doesn’t usually contain explicit instructions as to how to interpret the piece in terms of production or performance, apart from directions for dynamics, tempo and expression; this is left to the discretion of the performers, who are guided by their personal experience and musical education, their knowledge of the work’s idiom.

Classical music is governed by some known conventions that have its roots in a variety of forms, genres, styles and historical periods. These features together go in defining the term ‘classical music.’ Music rated as classical has always made its thumping presence felt. With the evolution of the popular music forms, the dominance of the classical form has not diminished. In-fact, it further magnified with new forms and codes.

There are several factors that define Classical Music. These can be classified under the following heads:-

Instrumentation – This is one way of classifying the classical genre of music. Different instruments are brought to use for creating the symphony that make it classical. Various string instruments like violin, string, woodwind instruments, brass instruments and other diverse percussion are commonly used to give this form of music a unique style. However, nowadays electronic instruments like electric guitars are occasionally brought to use.

Form and Technical Execution – The classical form generally take the form of a song, symphony, dance music, chamber suite, symphony, concerto, electronic music and more. The composition of this form of music requires expertise as a lot of complexities are involved in arriving at a balance between its emotional content and the music that accompanies it. The Classical Guitar Music is one such example of complex composition.

Complexity – The complexities involved in making of classical works are not just confined to instruments and beats. But a lot of it lies in the development, modulation, musical phrases and even length and variations of tones. A perfect combination of all these features results in the development of a perfect symphony of music. In-fact, the large scale classical works are built from smaller units of musical compositions.

Society – The classical forms of music maintains a repute of being a choice of the upper-level society. The music has never been popular among the working class. However, it is not compulsory as most of the classical musicians fall in the middle class range. The Classical Music CD buyers and concert goers also include the middle class audience.

Timeline – This form of music passed through several stages. It has its roots ingrained in medieval times, even dating back to ancient Greeks. The form has evolved a lot in the present age. It still has major time divisions like the Medieval (476 – 1400) and Renaissance (1400 – 1600). Then there is the common practice period that includes Baroque (1600 – 1750), Classical (1730 – 1820) and Romantic Periods (1895 – 1910). The modern contemporary period includes 20th Century Classical (1900 – 2000) and contemporary classical (1975 to current).

The form of music which is preserved as classical is primarily a written musical tradition. These written works are then given expression in the form of recordings, oral transformations and musical notes. Music plays an effective role in transmitting classical notations. The written instructions, however, do not have explicit instructions. But, music does help to build the mood of a classical masterpiece. It helps in better understanding of the masterpieces.

A great influence of the classical form of music lies in its cultural durability. It is interesting to note its evolution from past to the present form. The form has taken materials from popular music and folk music. Yet it retained its originality and showed up as updated versions of the classical masterpieces.

The commercialism of classical music has popularised it among the people. Now, DVDs of the latest versions of classical music are available in retail stores. The prices of the DVDs are kept low and so all income group people can buy the DVDs from the Classical Music Stores. People now need not go to a theatre to watch a performance. In-fact, theatre comes to home in the form of the DVDs.The classical music CDs have made it very simple for people to get acquainted to classical forms of music. Most of the current masterpieces are compiled in CDs and sold in the market. This has made it possible for people to have a library of the classical form of music at their homes.

Article by Spencer Nunamaker

Creating the underscore for a film can be a very time-consuming endeavor. The time frame for production isn’t really set in stone, rather, it’s more relative to the production of the film itself. I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone that movies get delayed all the time, nor should the reasons why escape anyone. Since the score is the last step in making a film, production delays explicitly control the composers’ schedule. If a composer feels he is being jerked around, or being asked to compose an unreasonable amount of work in an unreasonable amount of time he has two options; Quit (if the contract permits), or suffer.

There are two key-terms here, the score and the cue. The score is the entire music for the film, the cue is an individual moment of music. Those are just two definitions I felt I had to get out of the way. Typically, for most film composers in Hollywood, writing 2 minutes of music a day can be considered a success. With that in mind, one could reason that if you were scoring a typical 90-minute movie, you could probably expect to take 6-8 weeks to compose the music. This number varies remarkably from composer-to-composer, this is just an average time frame.

Most of the time the composer enters the process during post-production of the film, after shooting and editing is done, when it’s locked in. Why, you ask? First of all, it comes down to the cue itself. How can you can time a timpani hit to strike at the exact moment of a gunshot in the film? The answer; the film already has to exist lol.

Anyway, So now you know, the composer enters typically in post-production. Soon after he/she receives a copy of the film to score, the composer will attend whats called a spotting session. This is a meeting between the project leaders of the film, notably the director, and producer. This is where ideas about the score and the film are discussed and passed around, and decisions are made as to the nature of the music. The composer then takes the rough-cut of the film, goes home and writes up his spotting notes. These are a list of cues and notes about whats happening in the film and what music should/could accomodate. This is when the composer gets down to business, and starts actually composing. The music editor prepares the technical aspects of synchronizing the music with the picture during this stage. The composer is probably freaking out about the deadline at this point, as it pretty much controls his/her life. Once the composing begins, many other things start to happen; the orchestrators come in and do their stuff, studio musicians are scheduled to record at the studio which also has to be booked and so on.

Sketch of a film score

Here I will demonstrate an ideal schedule for the entire process.

* Week 1: The composer receives the rough cut, attends the spotting session, and the music editor prepares timing notes. * Weeks 2-5: Composing begins, gives rough copy of music to the orchestrator who orchestrates it, and sends to the copyist. * Weeks 7-8: Dubbing music with sound effects and dialogue. * Week 9: Film goes to lab for answer prints and color correction. * Week 12: Film is delivered to theaters for wonderful fun time for all

Obviously, this is the ideal, but often not the reality. Stuff happens, and it doesn’t always go so smoothly. I hope you gleaned at least a few tidbits from this article, this is the first in a series I’ll be writing about Film Scoring in general, as well as other subjects I’m studying at Berklee.
